Them Azores.
The only overt racism I heard from the farm kids completely shocked me. There was a common, unselfconscious disdain for the Portuguese communities in the Valley. The Portuguese?! Here? Why bother? Why such an unobtrusive group? Why not the Basques, who are also in the Valley and genuinely strange?
It also seemed like a bad move on my classmates’ parts. There were three whole girls in my engineering classes, including my freak Berkeley self. By far the most gorgeous was a woman of Portuguese descent with big black eyes.

I'm surprised to hear it; my Uncle's father is from Portugal. My Uncle is the foreman of a ranch in the foothills east of Visalia, and seems to earn nothing but (well deserved) respect.
Though maybe ranching is still 180 degrees opposed to farming...
Not a dairy?
Ah yes I remember that from high school. Except we called them "Portagees". We had ranches and farms in the area.
Maybe it is because the Basques know how to throw a party every summer at the Kern County Basque Club.
Jesus, the Internets is small. Do I always have Basque readers or did you just appear because I said the word Basque today? I'm sorry I called you strange.
Is the party big? Fun? Good food? Do you do secret Basque things? What are they?
I like this post. Big black-eyed portuguese engineer beauty - maybe she could be played by Salma Hayek in the movie. Who would play Megan? Maybe Ally Sheedy, even though they don't quite look alike. Or Jeanine Garofalo. They TOTALLY don't look alike, but you get the gist. I hope one of the Latino farm-dude-turned-civil-engineers is played by Gael GarcĂa Bernal!
So this one time, I talked my way into a project with Hector (unbelievably hot) and Martin (unbelievably hot) and for two weeks I sat between them in class, wondering when my life became a porn movie and hoping the music would start real soon.
"Not a dairy?"
No, an actual sprawled across the foothills (near Lemon Cove) ranch. They do the spring through fall cattle branding and fattening, before shipping them to the feed stalls/ slaughter houses at the end of the season.
