I wasn't sympathizing.

The guy behind me in line today had lovely eyes, green and brown. We'd already smiled, so I said "Do you get complimented on your eyes a lot?" "Yeah" he said. "You get that too?" "Yeah, but, I wasn't, um, I meant to be complimenting your eyes." "Eh," he grunted, utterly bored. "Thanks."

Remember "well done is better than well said" (even though in this case well done _was_ really just well said). You could have just told all your friends about the guy with nice eyes _that you never talked to_. So, well done.

I came home from work early yesterday and took the kids out to a rec area for a picnic (and gave the cool wife a break), and we ate picnic food, and fed ducks and played catch until the park guys threw us out at dusk! Nobody there with lovely eyes, except, of course, the daughter.

Maybe you are not the only person with a no-compliments comment policy. He could be your soulmate!

But didn't you get a thrill anyway from giving the compliment? That alone is almost worth it.

Almost. :)
