LOS OSOS:
For sewer funds, Osos looks to itself; Services district will borrow $630,000 from trash and water money to pay for research into a new wastewater project
San Luis Obispo Tribune – 5/8/06
By Abraham Hyatt, staff writer

Because a judge has blocked about $3 million of state money for a new Los Osos sewer, the town’s beleaguered services district will borrow $630,000 from its own water department and trash fees to finance research into the project.

District leaders say they don’t know yet how they’ll eventually repay the money.

Borrowing money from internal funds is something small agencies like Los Osos try to avoid but occasionally do, said Geoffrey Neill, a spokesman with the California Special Districts Association.

There’s a precedent for it at the Los Osos Community Services District.

The Los Osos CSD was $5M to the good before Los Osos recalled the pro-sewer Board of Directors. Now they're eating their young. You get what you elect, people. Or, sometimes, you get what your fellow citizens elect but nevertheless have to participate in horribly dogmatic, shortsighted decisions that will be tremendously expensive down the line. Thank god that only happens in Los Osos.

That's the second funniest thing I've heard all day. The first is that I did an estimate for a client and the total hours came to 138. They called a while later and asked, "How many days is that?".

*sigh*

Karma. Sometimes the voters get exactly what they deserve. (*Insert your favorite Bush-bashing comment here*).

Hello Megan,

Great blog.

"The Los Osos CSD was $5M to the good before Los Osos recalled the pro-sewer Board of Directors."

I know the following is hard to believe, but...

The new CSD board is also "pro-sewer." It's not that they don't want a sewer, it's that they don't want the sewer plant in the middle of their beautiful coastal town, like the recalled board did. And the reason the recalled board wanted the sewer plant in the middle of town is so the kind people of Los Osos could easily get to the amphitheater, and tot lot, and dog park, and a bunch of other frivolous and expensive crap that they were going to include in their sewer plant... in the middle of town.

I'm not making that up. They came up with a sewer plant that had an elaborate, multi-million park in it, then they decided to build it in the middle of town so the town-folk could get to their "sewer-park."

Uhhhg.

THAT's why they were recalled. Almost everyone in Los Osos wants a sewer, including everyone on the current CSD Board, they just don't want the sewer plant in the middle of town for no reason at all other than a silly "sewer-park" that Los Ososans didn't want in the first place.

And, oh yea, one more thing, taxpayers all over the State, including everyone up in Sac-town, were about to pay for Los Osos' amphitheater/tot-lot/sewer-park, while other communities, like Mariposa, couldn't get a dime of State funding for their reality-based sewer projects (translated: sans amphitheater).

Awesome story, eh?

I wrote about all of that here.

Ron is one sided in his assessment of the Los Osos sewer. He does not live in Los Osos either. He dislikes the people on the old board so whatever decisions they made were wrong in Ron's mind. Read the comments on the other blogs at blogger.com and the San Luis Obispo Tribune blogs on the LO sewer to get a more rounded picture.
