One does what one must.

I can't believe I am still licking my food to protect it.

Have you tried getting him fixed?

I'm sure that will be tempting in two or three years. But since he is poised to be the family beast of burden (really, he's gonna be a giant), I don't think we want to cost him any growth.

which reminds me of a joke:

A farmer had a field of watermelons. People would sneak into the field at night and steal the watermelons. The upset the farmer. Then he had an idea. He posted a sign on the edge of the field that read:

"One of these watermelons has been poisoned"

The sign seemed to work beautifully -- for a couple of days, no watermelons disappeared. Until one day, the farmer noticed someone had added another sign, next to his. The new sign read:

"Now there are two!"

And no, I don't know how the farmer was irrigating his watermelon field.

Watermelons? Where? Sac Valley? Probably furrows. I haven't seen overhead methods on melons; they get a wilt.
